Why Your RAM May Not Be Running at Full Speed

Many people think installing RAM is enough.

It isn't.

Memory manufacturers advertise the maximum tested speed, but that speed is usually stored as an XMP profile (Intel) or EXPO profile (AMD).

Without enabling one of these profiles, your motherboard normally boots using the safer JEDEC specification.

This conservative approach ensures almost every system boots successfully, but it also leaves performance on the table.


Why It Matters for Gaming

RAM speed affects more than synthetic benchmarks.

Modern games continuously stream textures, physics calculations, AI behavior, and world data between the CPU and memory.

When RAM runs below its intended speed, the CPU can spend more time waiting for data.

You may notice:

  • Lower average FPS

  • Worse 1% lows

  • Longer shader compilation

  • Increased stuttering

  • Longer loading times in some titles

The biggest gains usually appear in CPU-heavy games like:

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator

  • Cities: Skylines II

  • Counter-Strike 2

  • Civilization VII

  • Starfield

  • Escape from Tarkov

If you've already optimized your graphics settings but still experience inconsistent performance, slow memory could be one of the reasons.


Method 1: Check RAM Speed Using Task Manager

This is the fastest method because Windows already includes it.

Method 2: Check RAM Speed Using CPU-Z

CPU-Z remains one of the most trusted utilities among PC enthusiasts because it provides much more detailed memory information than Windows.

One thing that confuses many users is that CPU-Z reports the actual DRAM clock, not the effective DDR speed printed on the RAM box.

That difference is completely normal.


Download CPU-Z

Install the latest version from the official CPUID website.

Avoid downloading from unofficial software repositories.


Open the Memory Tab

You'll see something similar to:

Understanding DDR Memory

DDR stands for Double Data Rate.

Memory transfers data twice during each clock cycle.

Instead of showing the current speed, it lists every memory profile stored on the module.

Method 3: Check RAM Speed Using HWiNFO

Unlike Task Manager, it also displays:

  • Memory controller information

  • Active timings

  • Voltage

  • Memory latency

  • XMP or EXPO status

  • Motherboard information

This makes it particularly useful when troubleshooting unstable overclocks.


Where to Find Memory Speed

After opening HWiNFO:

  1. Open System Summary

  2. Locate Memory

  3. Find:

    • Memory Clock

    • Effective Clock

    • Timings

    • Gear Mode (Intel)

    • Infinity Fabric relationship (AMD)

This provides the most complete picture of your memory configuration.


Method 4: Check RAM Speed in BIOS

The BIOS always shows the actual memory settings your motherboard is applying.

If Windows reports unexpected values, checking the BIOS helps confirm whether the issue comes from firmware settings or the operating system.

To enter the BIOS:

  1. Restart your PC.

  2. Press the appropriate key during startup (commonly Delete or F2, depending on your motherboard).

  3. Navigate to the memory or overclocking section. The exact menu name varies by manufacturer.

If your RAM kit is rated for 6000 MT/s but the BIOS shows 4800 MT/s, the performance profile is probably not enabled.


How to Enable XMP or EXPO

Enabling the correct memory profile usually takes less than a minute.

On Intel Systems

  1. Enter the BIOS.

  2. Find the XMP setting.

  3. Select Profile 1 (or the recommended profile).

  4. Save changes and restart.

On AMD Systems

  1. Enter the BIOS.

  2. Find the EXPO setting.

  3. Enable the recommended profile.

  4. Save and reboot.

After Windows loads, verify the new speed again using Task Manager or CPU-Z.


Personal Example: A Free Performance Boost

When I helped a friend upgrade from 16 GB DDR4-2666 to a 32 GB DDR4-3600 kit, we expected a noticeable improvement in CPU-heavy games.

After installation, however, the frame rates barely changed.

A quick look in Task Manager revealed the RAM was still running at 2666 MT/s. The motherboard had never enabled the XMP profile.

After switching on XMP in the BIOS and rebooting, the memory ran at 3600 MT/s. In titles like Counter-Strike 2 and Cities: Skylines II, average FPS increased modestly, but the biggest difference was smoother gameplay and better 1% low frame rates. Stutters during large scenes were noticeably reduced.

It was one BIOS setting that unlocked the performance we had already paid for.
